Voting is a key part of the democratic process in the United States. California makes it easy to register to vote by filling out this form online. Vote-by-mail ballots will be sent out starting October 3. All registered voters this year will receive a vote-by-mail ballot to reduce contact with others and encourage safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Can I register to vote in California?

You may register to vote if you meet the following conditions:

  • You are a United States citizen and a resident of California, and
  • 18 years old or older on Election Day (November 3, 2020), and
  • Not currently in state or federal prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony, and
  • Not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court

If you are a Californian living away from home while attending a college, trade school or technical school, you may choose to register to vote using your home away from home address you use while at school or your traditional home address.

How do I submit my mail-in ballot?

As of 2019, you are able to return your vote-by-mail ballot through the USPS without needing additional postage. However, with delays this year in the US postal system, you can also choose to drop off your ballot at any polling station, 24-hour dropboxes, or at the Alameda County Voter Registrar office. Alameda County provides a map of ballot dropoff boxes here.
